♻️ Transforming Waste, Transforming Lives
Rapid urbanization and inadequate waste management continue to pose serious challenges in Bhubaneswar. Unplanned waste collection, improper segregation, and unsafe disposal practices contribute to air, water, and soil pollution, threatening both the environment and public health. These conditions increase the risk of diseases such as cholera and dengue, while the open burning of waste exposes communities to harmful air pollution and respiratory illnesses.
To address these challenges, Ruchika Social Service Organisation, with the support of the SwitchON Foundation, launched the Zero Waste Ward initiative in Bhubaneswar. The pilot project was inaugurated in 2023 by Smt. Sulochana Das, Mayor of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, reflecting a shared commitment to creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable neighbourhoods.
🌿 Community-Led Change
The initiative was implemented in Kargil Basti under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. Through intensive community mobilisation, awareness campaigns, innovative waste management practices, and active engagement of residents, local institutions, and other stakeholders, the programme encouraged responsible waste segregation, reduction, recycling, and scientific disposal.
The Zero Waste Ward initiative is not only transforming waste management practices but also inspiring communities to become active partners in protecting the environment and building a healthier future for generations to come.
